Frank McLallen Finds Clarity
Frank McLallen has had a hell of run in the Memphis music scene. He was a member of the frenetic post-punk outfit Ex-Cult, has performed with the legendary revivalist rocker Jack Oblivian, and much more. The touring lifestyle took its toll, though, prompting some introspection on what his musical future might hold.

He’s emerging now with some clarity and a solo album titled, “Extra Eyes.” It won’t come out until September—via Red Curtain Records—but he’s giving us a taste with the first single, “Manic.”
I’m all for making comparisons and offering sources of presumed inspiration—but it seems like there’s something more interesting to highlight about this laid back, self-reflective pop tune.
“Manic” is unique because it’s one of those rare moments when someone decides they’re going to share a piece of their interior world through songwriting, and they actually pull it off (without being heavy-handed about it). Regardless of how autobiographical the song may (or may not) be, McLallen is approaching it with abandon and honesty, which is refreshing.
The music video affirms this too. It’s really just a chance to watch McLallen free himself through his music, strumming a guitar that looks like it’s been raked through a dense field (with some nice design touches from Goner Records’ creative director Sara Moseley along the way). It’s a welcome reprieve from the cynicism and irony that surrounds us. Check out the video below and look for the full length in the fall.
