Beersippers keep the wheels turning
Beersippers (Birmingham, AL) embraces the DIY spirit. The band self-released their first EP on taped-over thrift store cassettes, each with a unique label handmade by the band and friends. Similarly, they hosted another craft party to make the construction paper backgrounds for the maybe 1,000 frames of stop motion animation in the video for “Biscuit Wheels.” The band’s songwriter Adam Measel directed to create a colorful lyric video brimming with pop culture references, inside jokes, and other personal touches.
Beersippers took over where Adam’s previous project, Dommel Mosel, left off. The new band delivers a hard-hitting sound with a powerful rhythm section and James Tisdale’s wall of sound guitar, but Adam’s signature blend of poignant and funny lyrics remain the focus. Adam’s songs often delve into themes of existential dread, monotony, heavy drinking, and too much TV. I’m not sure if “Biscuit Wheels” is a nod to King of the Hill’s Buck Strickland or Kingpin’s Big Ern, but it’s probably both. Junk food, the movie Simon Birch, David Berman’s Actual Air, and Auburn memorabilia flash across the screen to the line: “Even if I managed to have all the fun I could, I would still be trying to find which way to feel good.” What more could you ask for?
